Rhythmic Movement Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) is founded on the natural rhythmic
movements of a baby. The movements themselves are based upon movements taught
originally by Kerstin Linde in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Harald Blomberg, a psychiatrist Stockholm, learned the movements in the 1980’s. Since then he has investigated the role
of movement in development and its effect on learning, emotions and behavior if
movement and sensory stimulation do not happen easily and efficiently. RMT therefore also looks at the crucial
role of movement in the integration infant reflexes and what happens if these
reflexes persist at some level or other and do not integrate.
The movements that a baby
makes are essential for development of neural networks. The movements stimulate the growth and
branching of the networks and the myelination of the axons. These movements are also important for
the development of head control and muscle tone. When an infant doesn’t move around
freely then there is also not enough sensory stimulation for good integration
to happen in the neocortex.
RMT works with integrating
the retained, or underdeveloped, infant reflexes that are involved in learning
challenges such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, writing problems, focusing
and comprehension challenges, co-ordination difficulties and Asperger's
Syndrome. It has also been successful in working with people with
anxiety, panic, emotional imbalances, behavioral problems, schizophrenia,
Parkinson's, psychosis and general overwhelm.
RMT replicates the developmental movements associated with the infant
reflexes. It also incorporates the use of gentle isometric pressure to bring
awareness to the body, which assists in releasing the stress and learned
patterns of behavior.
Individuals can experience RMT in a formal class or as a one on one
consultation.
